Waukegan (Ill.) Police Chief Robert Kerkorian resigned as top cop Monday after acknowledging he made false claims about his military career, including claiming he came under fire during a SEAL mission in the 1980s.

The chief, who served in the U.S. Navy from August 1986 to February 1987, maintained he was a "SEAL trainee," but acknowledged he never entered Basic Underwater Demolition School/SEAL training, known as BUD/S.

Kerkorian will remain with the department at the rank of commander, reports the Chicago Tribune.
