Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Police Department unveiled a sculpture of former Chief Daryl F. Gates at the Police Academy.

Hundreds of active and retired LAPD officers attended the unveiling, as did many of the former chief's family members (shown in the above photo). Chief Gates, who was chief from 1978-1992, died on Aug. 16, 2010.

In addition to the bust, the department installed a plaque celebrating the former chief as a fearless and "courageous member of 'The Greatest Generation.'"

The chief taught his officers reverence for the law, smart enforcement, and a "toughness that goes hand in hand with serving the people with kindness, thoughtfulness, sometimes even tenderness."
