The Detroit Police Department's newest recruit may not have trouble meeting the physical requirements of the job.

The former athlete arrives weighing about 1,200 pounds, but is in good shape, according to his training. The recruit's name was stripped and he has been assigned number 15.

No. 15 is a horse, a chestnut Selle Francais gelding formerly named Korus who retired from competition after a knee injury.

The animal was donated by Denise Lutz, wife of retired automotive executive Bob Lutz, both of whom were instrumental in resurrecting the Detroit Police Mounted Unit after it was disbanded in 2005 for budgetary reasons.

The unit was reopened in June 2009, thanks to donations from the Detroit Police Foundation, a private group of philanthropists and horse lovers.
