Louisiana Officer Lost Control of Cruiser After Hitting Bicycle

A Ball (La.) Police Department officer lost control of his cruiser, after striking an unoccupied bicycle while responding to a call of an officer needing assistance, and was killed in a crash.

Officer Russell A. George was traveling south on U.S. 165 around 2:50 a.m. Sunday. After striking a bicycle that was on the pavement in an inside lane, Officer George lost control of his vehicle, which began spinning and then veered off the right side of the highway.

The cruiser struck several trees, came to rest, and caught fire. Officer George was unable to escape the car and died at the scene. The Louisiana State Police is investigating the crash.
