The Oakland Police Department unveiled its new Ford Police Interceptor sport utility vehicles this week, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The department is receiving 82 of the new vehicles, marking the largest fleet purchase since 2001.
“The cars are really needed,” Interim Police Chief Sean Whent said Tuesday as he stood near a phalanx of vehicles on display at the dead-end of San Pablo Avenue near Frank Ogawa Plaza outside City Hall. “Our fleet is extremely aged, and so to get more reliable patrol cars is really needed — it’s good for morale for the officers that they have a better work space to work in.”
