Decatur Electronics Helps Police to Catch Speeders

Decatur Electronics has joined with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois State Police (ISP) to promote work zone safety and speed enforcement during the construction season. State troopers will be deployed in specially equipped vans that include several Decatur Electronics products designed to send a clear message to speeders to slow down.

The vans will be topped with Decatur Electronics’ radar and speed message signs to indicate the speed at which drivers are traveling. Troopers in the vans will be able to take pictures of drivers exceeding posted speed limits in IDOT construction zones.

“Worker safety in construction zones is a clear priority for the governor, the ISP, and the IDOT and also for Decatur Electronics,” says Greg Roberts, national sales manager for Decatur.

According to 2004 data, 39 people were killed in Illinois work zones, two of them workers. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has set a goal of reducing total traffic deaths to fewer than 1,000 on Illinois highways by 2008.

New state speeding penalties signed into law last year will hit first-time work zone speeders, including those caught on camera, with a fine of $375. Two-time offenders are subject to a $1,000 fine and a 90-day license suspension. In addition, drivers hitting a worker are subject to a fine of up to $10,000 and 14 years in prison.
