NYPD Academy Graduates More Than 900 Officers
More than 900 new NYPD officer graduated from the Police Academy this week at a ceremony in Madison Square Garden.
More than 900 new NYPD officer graduated from the Police Academy this week at a ceremony in Madison Square Garden.
One new officer, Shaheed Ahmad, addressed his fellow classmates with a tale of how he had already had a taste of what it's like to be a first responder. About two weeks ago he pulled a woman off of the subway tracks at Union Square station. The rescue involved Ahmad and a civilian who lowered him down to the tracks to pull the woman out of the way of an oncoming train.
"At first it was scary, but it was just something inside me that made me react," he told the graduating class. "It gave me an idea of what's expected of me out there—to react for the better good."
The graduating class is the most diverse in the history of the NYPD. Twenty percent of the graduates are foreign born, and they come from 52 nations.
