Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier has frozen hiring for the Gay and Lesbian Liason Unit, a budget-cutting move that's angering the gay community in the nation's capitol, the Washington Post reports.
The unit is staffed by openly gay and lesbian officers, and has dwindled to four officers from seven. Instead of hiring officers for those positions, Lanier wants to train patrol officers who ask to work with the gay community.
Earlier in the year, Lanier disbanded the department's hostage negotiation unit, citing the need to reduce costs.
