The Philadelphia Police Department's budget has stabilized enough to hire a new class of recruits after July 1 that will train in a new facility, reports the Philadelphia Daily News.
Screening will be completed by the department's Internal Affairs investigators. Commissioner Charles Ramsey disbanded the agency's 25-member Recruit Background Investigations Unit and send its members back to patrol beats and detective divisions.
The next group of recruits will train and be taught at the former Armed Forces Reserve Center, near the Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The city acquired the property essentially at no cost from the Department of Defense in the Base Realignment and Closure program. The old academy, on State Road in the Northeast, will be used as a firing range.
