N.C. Deputy Assaulted While Helping Drowning Man
A Davidson County (N.C.) Sheriff's deputy attempting to save a man drowning in a lake was punched by the man's brother. While patrolling the High Rock Lake area of Lexington, deputy Tim Smith was notified by a family member that a 21-year-old man had gone underwater.

N.Y. Cops, Muslims Scuffle Over Head Scarves
The incident began when one woman began arguing with an amusement park staff member about the park's rule banning the head scarves. Operators said the ban is not Muslim specific and was imposed to keep hats from flying off the rides.

William Sahms, who works at Babe's Cabaret, a half-block from where Justin Schaubert was shot, shared Pinkeee's sentiment. "This wasn't the NOPD being trigger-happy," Sahms said. "They did the right thing, 100 percent."

Memphis Officer Fatally Shot at Downtown Hotel
Officer Timothy Warren was hit by gunfire while inside the hotel. Officer Warren, 39, was apparently shot in the head and pronounced dead at the Regional Medical Center following the shooting.

Boston PD Seeks Jurisdiction Over Waterfront
Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said yesterday that city police are better equipped to respond to crimes in areas such as the Seaport District and Carson Beach that technically are part of Boston but that fall under State Police jurisdiction.

A Dozen Officers Involved in Fatal South Miami Beach Holiday Shooting
Sgt. Alejandro Bello, president of the Miami Beach Fraternal Order of Police, said a dozen officers — eight from Miami Beach and four from outside the department — were involved in the confrontation with the still unidentified driver and the subsequent shooting.

Shots Fired: Pinellas County, Fla., Crime Scene
Pinellas County (Fla.) Sheriff's Sgt. Raymond Fleming was among the deputies who pursued Kentin Dion Brooks during his campaign of vehicular terror. Dep. Jeffrey Newman performed the PIT maneuver on the black Mustang, and then Brooks opened up on the officers with a 9mm handgun from behind tinted windows. Help tourists by telling them which areas are safe for parking and walking. Identify areas where they need to lock their doors, roll up the window and drive with a purpose. Of course, they may ask about accommodations, restaurants and the usual tourist spots. Be prepared for a walk-in medical center question.

There is a long recognized relationship between tourism and crime. Much of this can be attributed to "vacation behavior," a general carefree attitude that translates into carelessness and leaves the tourist vulnerable.
