Police Week 2011: Candlelight Vigil
The 2011 candlelight vigil during National Police Week in Washington, D.C., drew up to 20,000 officers, police survivors, dignitaries, and other law enforcement supporters to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial for the reading of 316 names added to the wall this year. The vigil is organized by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

New York Officer Pulls Girl From Frozen Bay
Officer DeMatteo suffered a severe asthma attack once his adrenaline rush subsided and the effects of the icy water and his exertion registered with his body. He was already at the hospital at that point and they were able to treat him and release him after 12 hours.

NLEOMF Will Add 317 Officers To Memorial In May
Of the 317 officers, 153 were killed in the line of duty in 2010. An additional 164 officers, who fell in previous years, have been discovered and vetted by the memorial fund's research department.

Is Law Enforcement Entering a Deadly New Era?
The spike in duty deaths has occurred despite the many advancements in police training, equipment (particularly protective armor), and emergency medical trauma care. What does appear to be occurring is more and more criminals are showing an increasing willingness to engage police in armed confrontations.
