California K-9 Loses Leg to Gunshot Wound

A Vacaville, California, Police K-9 was shot Wednesday Jan. 15 and survived surgery, but has lost his left front leg to the wound.

K-9 Murph responded with Vacaville SWAT and crisis negotiators to a call that came from a man armed with a rifle who called 911 and threatened to shoot others, police say.

The suspect, identified by law enforcement as Darren Crail, 52, reportedly called Vacaville PD Dispatch “several times threatening to harm himself” and others, police say. Officers contacted Crail who unfortunately declined all resources and various services offered to him,” police say.

When police arrived at his address around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Crail exited the front door holding the rifle and refused to surrender, police said in a Facebook release.

K-9 Murph was deployed to take Crail into custody, police say. Crail reportedly fired “at least one round” from the rifle, wounding K-9 Murph.

“Crail sustained minor injuries as a result of the apprehension and was treated at a local hospital,” police said.

K-9 Murph has served with the Vacaville PD for more than three years.
