California Undercover Officer Robbed at Gunpoint, Suspects Arrested

When the undercover officer arrived at the planned location, a parking lot, to exchange an undisclosed amount of money for the counterfeit pills, the two suspects each pointed a handgun at him and robbed him.

Two men are accused of robbing an undercover Santa Rosa, California police officer at gunpoint during an undercover operation Tuesday on the southeast side of the city, police said.

According to a news release issued Wednesday, Ulises Vera, 25, of Bakersfield, and Manuel Cardenas Jr., 28, of Fresno, were arrested on a number of charges, including suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, robbery and, for Vera, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. Cardenas, however, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from an area hospital, the Press Democrat reports.

At about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, as part of an undercover operation, an officer with the department’s Narcotics Investigation Team was supposed to purchase 10,000 fentanyl pills that had been made to appear as oxycodone pills.
