Burnsville Police Radio Reveals Horror of Shooting that Killed 2 Officers

While officers attempted to negotiate, they say the suspect, identified as Shannon Cortez Gooden, opened fire with a rifle.

Early Sunday morning, two Burnsville, Minnesota, police officers and a firefighter/paramedic were killed during a response to a man holding his family hostage. That man reportedly fired on first responders with a rifle and hours later killed himself.

While officers attempted to negotiate, they say the suspect, identified as Shannon Cortez Gooden, opened fire with a rifle. A rifle he could not legally own, KARE reports.

Three officers were hit. Two, Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, were killed. Sgt. Adam Medlicott was injured. Paramedic Adam Finseth was shot and killed while tending to the wounded

The radio traffic also revealed not just the chaos of the attack but also responders' vulnerability and lack of cover.

"We need more armor. Do we have a fire truck? We need a firetruck, or something parked out in front of this house, we're all pinned down."
