The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has announced $78.1 million in grants to fund the hiring of 1,004 new law enforcement officers in 181 cities and towns across the country.
The officers will be assigned to a community policing beat and will be a part of the homeland security plans of each local law enforcement agency that received the grants.
“These grants will provide the resources state and local law enforcement need for terrorism preparedness and homeland security initiatives,” said Attorney General John Ashcroft.
