Calif. Deputy's Shooting Leads To 11-Hour Standoff

More than 100 officers surrounded a Modesto, Calif., apartment complex, following the fatal shooting of a Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputy on Thursday.

More than 100 officers surrounded a Modesto, Calif., apartment complex, following the fatal shooting of a Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputy on Thursday.

At about 11 a.m., Deputy Robert Paris and a civilian believed to be a locksmith were killed when they arrived to serve eviction papers at the building and were met with gunfire. A second deputy was not injured.

FBI agents and SWAT officers surrounded the building, and fired flash-bang grenades and tear gas into the building where the suspect was holed up. During the 11-hour standoff that followed, a fire broke out in the building, reports the Fresno Bee.

A charred body was found inside the fire-ravaged dwelling. Investigators said it could take weeks to make a positive identification, reports the Associated Press.
