A deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish (LA) Sheriff’s Office died in a single-vehicle wreck Thursday morning, reports WAFB.

According to a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, Lt. Steven Whitstine, 42, was killed on his way to work when his unit veered off Port Hudson-Pride Road in Zachary, and struck a tree and then a bridge before overturning.

He was a member of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit. Sources say his dog, Sixx, was taken to a vet with minor injuries to be treated.

Whitstine is survived by his wife, Deputy Elisha Whitstine, and their children.
