Candlelight Vigil Honoring 701 Fallen Officers to be Held Thursday Night

In the law enforcement community, 62 % of deaths in 2020 were a result of COVID-19 (there were 295 deaths in 2020 that the memorial approved and out of 295, 182 were COVID-19. No officers died in 2019 from COVID, as it was not a pandemic and officers were not dying until 2020 when it was labeled a pandemic.

Virtual Candlelight Vigil for Fallen Officers to be Held on YouTube Thursday

This year’s virtual Candlelight Vigil will honor the 394 fallen officers whose names will be engraved onto the Memorial this year. Due to increased officer fatalities during the COVID-19 pandemic, NLEOMF said it has expanded the Memorial sooner than anticipated.

264 Line-of-Duty Deaths in 2020, Most from COVID

The Memorial Fund announced in its proprietary "2020 Law Enforcement Officers Fatalities Report" that 264 federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial officers died in the line of duty over the past year, representing a 96% increase over the 135 officers who died in the line of duty in 2019. In the category of “Other” causes, which includes 145 Confirmed Covid-19 deaths, the number of fatalities is up 300% over 2019.

NJ Officer Named NLEOMF Officer of the Month

LT. David Grogan began calling out to the trapped residents when he heard a woman respond and then crawled onto the balcony and into the burning apartment to locate her. He found the woman and pulled her onto the balcony where firefighters were waiting. Lieutenant Grogan helped lower the woman onto a fire truck ladder where she was helped to safety.
