Man Wanted for 1971 Cop Killing Says He Wants to Return from Cuba

The 1971 shooting in which Hill is accused occurred during a traffic stop on a stretch of Interstate 40 west of Albuquerque known as Nine Mile Hill on Nov. 8. Hill and his two accomplices – Michael Finney and Ralph Goodwin (both now deceased) – belonged to a black militant separatist group known as Republic of New Afrika. They were headed east from California with a car loaded with weapons for the movement.

According to the hand-written murder indictment found at the Westchester County Archives in Elmsford, Ryer held two pistols "charged with gunpowder," each containing "one Leaden Bullet." As the confrontation escalated, Ryer "willfully," and with "malice... did shoot and discharge" the weapon in his left hand, resulting in "one mortal wound of the depth of five inches and of the breadth of half an inch" in Smith's chest," the indictment says.
