San Francisco Police Respond to BART Protest

A raucous crowd protesting the shooting death of a BART passenger marched through downtown San Francisco tonight, overturning trash cans, tossing traffic barriers and lighting small garbage fires. San Francisco police in riot gear quickly moved in and closed off streets as the crowd broke up into smaller groups, scattering in all directions.

BART Shooting Protest Organizer Devastated by Oakland Riot

When the marchers reached the Lake Merritt BART Station around 6:15 p.m., protest organizer Evan Shamar saw things start to go bad. Marchers began kicking newspaper stands and using papers to start fires. As he saw them throwing bottles and spitting on police cars, Shamar said he wept and returned to the Fruitvale Station.
