Mentally Disabled Man Convicted of Killing San Jose Cop

A mentally disabled man was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder for fatally shooting a rookie San Jose police officer in 2001. DeShawn Campbell, 29, faces life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing Officer Jeffrey Fontana with a single shot to the head from a .45-caliber pistol during a traffic stop early Oct. 28, 2001, in San Jose's Almaden Valley neighborhood.

Partner Tells Court BART Officer was Shaken After Shooting

Former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle was distraught but silent after he shot an unarmed passenger to death early New Year's Day, his partner testified Wednesday. "When I looked at Officer Mehserle, his forehead was extremely sweaty, his face was flushed and his eyes were big," Officer Jon Woffinden testified at Mehserle's preliminary hearing on a murder charge. "He didn't say anything. ... I told him that he needed to take a walk."
