Officer Who Responded to Joplin Tornado Dies from Lightning Injuries

Officer Jefferson "Jeff" Taylor, who was struck by lightning on Monday, May 23, while on tornado disaster response duty in Joplin, passed away at a hospital here on Friday. He was 31 years old. He worked for Riverside, a suburb on the north side of Kansas City.

Newark Police Officer William Johnson was remembered today as a man devoted to his native city and his two daughters a week after he was killed in a drive-by shooting. He was off duty and standing at the counter of a fast-food restaurant in Newark waiting for a slice of pizza.

Border Patrol Agent Shot, Killed in Southern Arizona

Agent Brian Terry, 40, was killed at about 11 p.m. near Peck Canyon, about 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border west of Rio Rico on the Interstate 19. Four suspects are in custody and one is being pursued, according to a press release from Customs and Border Protection.

Suspect in Slaying of Utah Deputy Captured

Arizona’s Coconino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Erika Wittenmuth said Curley was taken into custody about 1 a.m. in the Lost Spring subdivision after a homeowner reported seeing a man with a rifle slung over his shoulder trying to get into his home about 12:20 a.m. In all, 17 police officers rushed to the scene and soon located Curley.
