The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) recently held its 2010 national conference in Henderson, Nev. FLEOA is a volunteer organization that provides legal assistance and representation for its members. Federal officers do not have union support like municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers, so FLEOA fills this need for its members and advocates for legislation important to them. In fact, FLEOA's unified voice led to the Special Agent Samuel Hicks Families of Fallen Heroes Act being signed into law on June 1, 2010 (P.L. 111-178). Oshkosh Defense's Tactical Protector Vehicle (TPV) looks ready for serious business. It's a large vehicle compared to a passenger SUV, but it's actually smaller than some other tactical rescue vehicles designed for the police market. Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Defense has been making armored rolling stock for the U.S. military since 1918. The Oshkosh Defense TPV—the company's first tactical response vehicle for law enforcement—benefits from its manufacturer's long history of making military vehicles. Knowing how to effectively respond to an unexpected knife attack is a crucial officer-safety concern. If a suspect is further than 21 feet, you may be able to fire one or two shots, though you'll want to rotate off line to try to get out of the path of the incoming knife. Firefighters, the military, paramedics, even postal carriers, drive vehicles built for their jobs. The Carbon Motors' E7 would give law enforcement officers such a vehicle. Time will tell whether it becomes the "patrol car of the future." But here's a closer look at its purpose-built (mostly interior) features that have made an impression with officers.
Remington has reentered the handgun business with the new 1911 R1, manufactured under the ERPC brand. The company last made 1911s during World War I. This new model is a 1911A1 variant with some outstanding modern upgrades. Remington says this 1911 is just the first model in an extensive line. By the end of this year, it plans to offer a stainless-steel model. Other models under consideration include a Commander-style 1911, 1911-style pistols chambered for calibers other than .45 auto, and perhaps a centennial model for 2011.
More than 20,000 officers, police survivors, dignitaries, and invited guests participated in a candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in D.C. This year, the vigil included the reading of 334 names of officers who have been added to the memorial walls, including 116 who ended watch in 2009.
The names of almost 19,000 law enforcement men and women have been added to the curving, 304-foot marble walls of the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial. The officers and families who knew them arrived at the memorial during National Police Week to pay tribute by leaving roses, photos, wreaths, a SWAT helmet, a duty flashlight, and other personel items.
Each year, about 1,100 officers participate in the Police Unity Tour, a 320-mile bicycle ride from New Jersey to D.C. during National Police Week. The ride honors fallen officers from the prior year and raises funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). Read our coverage of the unity tour.
Kawasaki reentered the law enforcement market with the 2009 Concours 14P police motorcycle that arrived in June. The Idaho State Police bought seven bikes to become the first agency to begin using them for motor patrol. For 2010, the company added a few upgrades such as heated hand grips, traction control and a tire pressure moniting system as standard features. Glock's pair of Gen4 pistols—the G17 (9mm) and G22 (.40 caliber)—upgrade the Gen 3 line with adjustable backstraps, a rougher-textured grip, double spring to reduce recoil and new slide serrations.
