An officer must be able to handle a suspect who becomes resistive or combative during a pat-down search. Here are two moves you can use that will help you take him to the ground, so you keep yourself safe and in control of the situation. Read our full article, " Dynamic Takedown Techniques ."
Two Dynamic Takedowns

Start from the Standing Basic Postion.

Once the suspect is prine, reach under with your driving hand and take control of the suspect's wrist. Pull the arm up and toward the suspect's head until his shoulder locks.

Start from the Standing Basic Search position. Note the downward pressure on the suspect's hands to anchor them in place and slow down escapes.

Initiate the takedown the same as you do in the Real Pull-down.

Keep the suspect's arm compressed and immobilized.

Recover to a preparatory position.

To initiate the Rear Pull-down, step out of the hole and pull the suspect's hands backward and downward, breaking their vertical plane.

Quickly drive your hips and shoulders toward the hole, taking the suspect with you.

Continue pulling as you rotate your hips and shoulders, driving the suspect into the hole.

Use your free arm to wrap and compress the suspect's arm.

Drive the suspect's elbow toward his head, while pulling his wrist across his body.

Transition to a Prone Control by placing your compressing hand on his elbow, while your locking hand controls the wrist.
