Maddox and Gramins exchanged gunfire through the patrol car's windshield. The officer fired .45 ACP rounds from his Glock.

Maddox first used a Smith & Wesson 5906 9mm pistol until a spent cartridge failed to properly eject, jamming the action. He then ditched the pistol.

An SKS rifle was recovered from Maddox's trunk along with a magazine and 7.62 rounds. Luckily, this rifle never came into play.

Officer Gramins pursued Maddox into a residential neighborhood, after identifying the white Bonneville as a vehicle used in a bank robbery.

Investigators reconstructed the volley of rounds that struck the officer's patrol car.

Maddox, who lived on the South Side of Chicago, brought the fight by drawing a handgun and charging Officer Gramins.

Officer Gramins was a 14-year veteran of his agency who partly credits SWAT training for coming out on top.

When his initial weapon jammed, Maddox returned to his vehicle to retrieve a Bersa Blue Thunder .380.

Investigators used crime-scene stickers to mark the location of the hits on Officer Gramins' patrol car.
