Shots Fired: Scottsdale, Ariz., Crime Scene Photos

Special UnitsPhotos 10

Det. James Peters of Scottsdale (Ariz.) PD SWAT responded to a Safeway grocery on April 23, 2006, following a multi-agency pursuit of suspect Daniel Brown, who had scuffled with a patrol officer while attempting to steal a BMW. Brown then jacked a Krispy Kreme delivery truck and led officers to the Safeway, where he crashed through the front doors and then took a senior citizen hostage with a handgun. Peters ended the threat with two well-placed shots. Read the full story of this " Shots Fired ." Photos courtesy of Scottsdale PD. Warning: Gallery contains a graphic image.

After Peters' first round struck Brown in the back, the officer squeezed the trigger a second time, striking him in the head.

Brown was armed with a Bersa .45-caliber handgun, which he used to carjack a delivery truck and hold an elderly man hostage. After the shooting, officers learned Brown had accidentally released the gun's magazine. One full-metal jacketed (FMJ) round was recovered in Brown's pocket.

A collage tattoo on Brown's right arm shows a version of the "smile now, cry later" theatrical tattoo that depicts two puppet masks. The fatalistic tattoo often conceals needle marks on drug users and conveys the recipient's jaundiced view that life is a farce.

During the pursuit, suspect Brown shredded the tire of the stolen Krispy Kreme delivery truck after hopping a curb and bringing the vehicle to rest in front of a Safeway grocery.

After taking hostage an elderly male employee at gunpoint, Brown refused to surrender to Det. Peters who confronted him at the rear of the store. After ordering him to release the hostage, Peters heard Brown yell an obscenity and lined up a shot with his Colt Commando carbine.

Brown had multiple tattoos on his torso, arms, and legs, including this one of the word "Ruthless" on his mid-section.

After stealing a BMW, suspect Daniel Brown asked a Peoria (Ariz.) PD officer to help him move the disabled vehicle. The two men scuffled, and Brown ran toward a gas station, where he stole a delivery truck. He then led a trio of law enforcement agencies on a pursuit that terminated at a Safeway grocery store.

Det. James Peters, 38, of the Scottsdale (Ariz.) PD arrived at the Safeway following the SWAT callout. He arrived to find Brown had taken hostage an elderly male employee and was armed with a handgun. Peters had been involved in three OIS encounters previously.

Peters' first round from his .223 Colt carbine struck Brown in the back as he held hostage an elderly male employee of the Safeway. The spent cartridge came to rest near a AAA battery.

After ditching the truck, Brown charged toward the Safeway's north entrance, running headlong into the doors that were being held closed by the store's manager. Brown knocked the doors off their hinges and sent the manager flying.
