Ford Stealth PI Concept

Vehicle OpsPhotos 7

The Ford Motor Co. produced a "stealth" version of its 2012 Police Interceptor for an automotive trade show. Ford has no current plants to produce the stealth concept vehicle , yet it released additional photos showing its spy-car features that include lighting that isn't noticible until its activated, a secret weapons compartment in the glove box and more sinister body styling lines. The vehicle appeared at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in early November. Photos are courtesy of Ford.

Here's a final image of the concept vehicle while on display at the SEMA Show. Photo by Ashley Majeski Smissen.

The vehicle's glove box offers a secret weapons compartment for a pair of semi-automatic pistols. And the passenger-side airbag compartment provides an additional hideaway for duty gear.

The car's body was lowered an inch, and the special 22-inch wheels are inside a staggered rim section, so the front is 3 inches and the rear is 3.5 inches.

The back of the vehicle sports an aggressive spoiler with bead lights that (also painted black) remain unnoticed until the car is started. The taillights are smoked, the windows tinted.

Ford designer Melvin Betancourt developed a customized undercover stealth version of the 2012 Police Interceptor, described as "stylish and full of high-tech surprises." The inspiration for the project came from Lockheed's SR-71 "Blackbird" - the long range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998.

Ford designer Melvin Betancourt revamped the dashboard and console to look like a production console, but with a "waterfall" instrument cluster. The car's center console includes an onboard computer, police radio, and articulating-mount laptop that retracts during stealth mode.

The exterior of the vehicle is solid black with a mesh grille. The lights on the car are designed to be inconspicuous, blending in until illuminated.
