Ammunition: 2011

WeaponsPhotos 8

From full metal jacket to shotgun slugs, the right rounds are essential for every firearm's optimal performance. This is even more important for police officers, who depend on their weapons to help protect and serve. Check out POLICE Magazine's gallery of top manufacturers' newest ammo offerings for law enforcement.

International Cartridge Corp.'s Green Elite JOT: The Green Elite JOT (Jacketed Open Tip) uses the Barnes RRLP (Reduced Ricochet Low Penetration) projectile to achieve maximum accuracy with a lead-free frangible projectile. The jacketed copper/tin projectile allows more range and accuracy of lead-free ammunition while maintaining the high level of duty standards. The reduced ricochet and low penetration of the ammunition is excellent for training and duty in the crowded urban environment. The ammunition is a ballistic match for current duty ammunition. International Cartridge manufactures it in three calibers: 223 Rem, 7.62X39, and 308 Win.

Federal's Tactical Bonded Tip: The newest addition to Federal's Tactical Bonded line is the Tactical Bonded Tip. Engineered for minimal deflection and maximum weight retention, this high-performance duty round boasts consistent penetration when shot through various intermediate barriers. The polymer tip and boat-tail design increase ballistic coefficient and downrange performance-giving shooters added confidence their shot will hit the mark when it matters most.

Speer LE's Gold Dot Duty Rifle: Speer LE Gold Dot Duty Rifle is now available for agencies. Gold Dot rifle bullets are optimized to ensure expansion out of barrels down to 10 inches at a wide variety of velocities out to 200 yards. Like their handgun counterparts, the Gold Dot rifle bullets are constructed using Gold Dot technology. The process of joining the jacket and core one molecule at a time eliminates the potential for the leading cause of bullet failure-jacket/core separation. It also ensures impressive weight retention through barriers as tough as auto glass.

Dakota Ammo's Cor-Bon Pow'RBall: Cor-Bon Pow'RBall was originally designed to eliminate feeding problems in pistols that would choke on the new large mouthed JHP bullets. The patented Pow'RBall projectile is a JHP bullet with a polymer ball crimped in the tip. This tip enhances feeding in those finicky feeding pistols but it also delays the expansion of the projectile when it hits soft tissue, making it a more controlled expansion bullet. This controlled expansion gives you deeper penetration, better weight retention, and more consistent expansion in soft tissue. The lighter weight projectile also makes recoil recovery much easier for follow-up shots.

Hornady 308 Win. 165-Grain GMX TAP Barrier: Hornady's TAP Barrier turns cover into concealment. The 165-grain GMX TAP Barrier is constructed of a monolithic material and has a double cannelured design to reduce fouling and pressure. The Gilding Metal eXpanding (GMX) round penetrates auto glass, sheet metal, and other conventional barriers with exceptional weight retention while still delivering superior terminal performance on the other side.

Remington's Golden Saber HPJ: Designed for law enforcement and personal defense, the Golden Saber High Performance Jacket combines match-type accuracy, deep penetration, maximum expansion, and near 100-percent weight retention. At the heart of Golden Saber High Performance Jacket (HPJ) handgun ammunition is a high-performance hollow point bullet with a jacket made entirely of cartridge brass, not copper gilding metal, so it releases energy over longer distance while mushrooming. Designed to meet U.S. federal law enforcement standards, Golden Saber HPJ is available in .380, 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.

Winchester Ranger: The New Winchester Ranger 38 Special +P 130gr. JHP Bonded round offers a great new option for officers carrying 38 special snub-nose backup revolvers. This round is engineered to maximize terminal ballistics as defined by the demanding FBI test protocol, which simulates real-world threats. The proprietary bonding process welds lead and jacket together to work as a unit, controlling expansion and providing enhanced retained weight upon impact. This bonding process ensures the lead permanently adheres to the jacket for maximum stopping power.

Custom Cartridge Hush Frangible: Custom Cartridge Inc.'s Hush frangible duty ammunition provide sub-MOA accuracy, a one-shot stop, and minimize hazards to other officers, bystanders, and adjacent structures from over-penetration or ricochets. Proprietary processes and tooling ensure outstanding performance and match-grade accuracy. This ammo is currently carried by increasing numbers of SWAT/SRT teams, and the LAPD bomb squad uses Hush for remote bomb detonation and disruption. SWAT/SRT teams and bomb squad orders are specifically tuned for their usage. The company's research and development staff are available for advanced ballistic development and analysis.
