When a tornado destroyed the home of a Calera, Alabama, family they were offered an unusual refuge: a Calera Police Department jail cell.
A Vestavia, Alabama, police officer who was helping out in Calera after the storm found the family standing in the rain after their mobile home was wrecked, WBRC reports.
“That family had nowhere to go, nothing to eat, and and it’s the middle of the night, so we brought them back to the PD,” Calera Police Chief David Hyche said. “We got on the phone trying to find aid, but you can imagine at one or two in the morning, we couldn’t really get help for them.”
Hyche said they set up a place for them to stay, pets included, in a jail cell at the Calera Police Department, AL.com reports.
