An Oscoda County, Michigan, sheriff’s deputy saved the life of a 17-year-old who nearly drowned while swimming in the Au Sable River at the Mio Hydro Dam last week.

The Oscoda County Sheriff's Office says the teen from Detroit was struggling in the water around 4:30 p.m. and couldn't get back to shore. A deputy arrived minutes later and threw a rescue disc, but the teen was too fatigued to hold on, ABC12.

The deputy then jumped in the water and swam to the 17-year-old. Both of them struggled in the water and bystanders reported that they both briefly went underwater several times.

A man from Mio and two firefighters from the Tri Town Fire Department, who witnessed the incident, helped bring the deputy and the 17-year-old back to shore. The deputy continued helping the 17-year-old breathe before an Oscoda EMS ambulance arrived.
