Sgt. Floyd H. Miles, Jr., suffered a medical emergency after coming to the aid of a fellow deputy.
The incident began around 12:30 p.m. when a deputy working traffic spotted a man approaching on a moped. The man on the moped rode up to the deputy’s vehicle and the moped fell over on the deputy’s vehicle, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. The deputy then noticed the man had blood on his “person.”
A statement from the sheriff’s office on Facebook says the deputy asked the man if he was OK. The man reportedly told the deputy that people were after him and were trying to kill him. The deputy put the subject in the rear of the patrol vehicle and called for EMS.
“Once Charles City County Fire/EMS arrived, they transferred the subject to the rear of the ambulance. After several minutes, the deputy returned to the rear of the ambulance and that is when the subject become combative towards the deputy and struck them,” the sheriff’s office said.

Sgt. Miles experienced a medical event during the struggle and was rushed to a local hospital where he died.
