An Oakland (California) Police Department internal affairs sergeant killed a man who was shooting at him early Tuesday morning near Oakland City Hall.
The sergeant, who has more than 20 years of experience and was in plain clothes, was on his way to work in an unmarked police car around 4 a.m. when a man on the street, armed with a gun, approached him, police told KTVU.
The man then reportedly banged on the trunk of the sergeant's unmarked car and pulled out his weapon.
There was an exchange of gunfire, according to police, with the sergeant firing through the back window of his car.
The suspect was killed. The sergeant was not hit.
