TASER Device Saves Newborn and Mother

Police were able to subdue a man who was preventing a woman and her newborn from receiving medical attention.

Police dispatchers in Cleveland received a 911 call Saturday night claiming that a baby had been born in an East 52nd Street home earlier that day and that the infant was dead. Officers responded to the home shortly before 9:00 p.m. where they were met by the 27-year-old male resident. The man refused to let officers inside and, after reviewing previous incidents at the home, police called for SWAT and crisis negotiator assistance.

About 6:00 a.m. on Sunday the male appeared at the door and was subdued with a TASER device. Inside officers found a woman bound to a wheelchair along with a 20-month-old child and the two-day-old baby to which the umbilical cord and placenta were still attached. The women and children were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where the newborn appeared to be in good health. The man was taken to Charity Hospital for evaluation.
