Cook County (Ill.) Sheriff Tom Dart has announced that a former FBI agent has been hired to command the department's internal affairs unit.
Joseph C. Ways, formerly the No. 2 agent at the FBI's Chicago office is now in charge of the department's internal investigations. Sheriff Dart also issued a statement that said Ways will monitor the department's hiring to make sure it complies with a consent decree banning political considerations from most hiring.
An FBI agent since 1987, Ways focused primarily on white-collar crimes, Chicago street gangs, and health-care fraud. He also worked on special investigations of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan and the Chicago Police Department.
