A San Antonio police officer's bullet halted an encounter at an Exxon gas station, when it struck the driver who had struck the officer with his vehicle moments earlier, according to the agency.
The incident started when Officer Michael McFarland and an unnamed partner went to the gas station for a soda. While there, an elderly man asked the officers for assistance with three men he said were assaulting him.
The partner restrained one of the three men, as the two other suspects drove away. They returned as McFarland exited the store and eventually stuck the officer with the vehicle.
As he lay incapacitated, the driver attempted to back the vehicle toward McFarland, who fired a shot that struck the driver in the arm and caused him to crash the vehicle into a parked car.
The officer was treated and, as a matter of routine practice, placed on administrative leave while the San Antonio Police Department investigates the shooting.
The driver will be charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.
