New Orleans Picks Nashville Chief to Fix Troubled Department

The New Orleans Police Department's new leader, Ronal Serpas, takes over a department reeling from several scandals including a coverup involving the shooting of unarmed civilians in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The 49-year-old Serpas, a former second-in-command at the department, has been the chief in Nashville since 2004, NOLA.com reports.

On Wednesday, new Mayor Mitch Landrieu also asked the U.S. Department of Justice to begin probing the department, a move expected to lead to a consent decree and court-appointed monitor.
