Chicago's Mayor Daley Won't Seek Reelection

Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley, a mainstay in city politics who has been at odds with the police union and lost a high-profile U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning his handgun ban , won't seek another turn in office.

In announcing he would not seek re-election in 2011, Daley noted that it's "time for me, it's time for Chicago to move on," the Chicago Tribune reports.

Daley served 21 years as the city's mayor, and steps down as the city faces a $655 million budget shortfall. Daley traded verbal barbs with the police union during a contract impasse that dragged out for three years, and officers have publically questioned the chummy relationship between the mayor and police Superintendent Jody Weis .
