Nearly 140 officers will be shifted to beat patrol from jail duty to meet Mayor Rahm Emanuel's goal of adding 1,000 more cops to the street since taking office.
Mayor Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced the move, which means 1,019 additional officers have been shifted to beat patrol since mid-May. The city will hire 104 civilian detention aides in jails to replace the 138 shifted to patrol. Also, jails will be consolidated, which will bring 34 more cops to patrol duty.
