During an interview with Scott Pelley, Commissioner Kelly said the department has the equipment and the training to take down smaller aircraft.
The New York Daily News has reported on the the revamping of the NYPD's aviation fleet in 2005 with the addition of a Bell 412 helicopter that could fly as high as 20,000 feet for stealth surveillance of the city. The NYPD also has had Agusta 119 copters armed with .50-caliber semiautomatic rifles that could blast large moving objects like boats, planes or tractor-trailers from hundreds of yards away.
Commissioner Kelly also defended the agency's use of a network of 2,000 surveillance cameras expected to grow to 3,000 cameras. Patrol officers have also been given hand-held devices that detect nuclear weapons and improvised explosive devices.
