Richmond County (Ga.) Sheriff's Deputy James Paugh was hit at least nine times by an Army National Guard soldier, and returned fire to hit Christopher Michael Hodges in the left forearm.
Evidence shows that Hodges, 26, fired 42 shots, including one that disabled the deputy's weapon. Deputy Paugh, 47, fired three shots. One shot struck Hodges, who then killed himself.
The M-4 rifle Hodges used was purchased in Christiana, Tenn., earlier this year, said Sheriff Ronnie Strength.
Hodges served in the Tennessee National Guard and had been training at Fort Gordon. The military said Hodges had served on active duty and later in the National Guard at least since 2005, when he was stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga., with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. He served in Iraq from 2007 to 2008.
