Students returned to Armin Jahr Elementary School Thursday in Bremerton, Wash., a day after a third-grader was accidentally shot after a gun in the backpack of another student discharged.
Amina Bowman, 8, remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center. She will require several more surgeries, because the bullet went through her right arm and into her right abdomen, causing massive bleeding, reports KIRO-TV.
A 9-year-old fellow student who brought a loaded .45-caliber pistol to school is expected to face charges, Todd Dowell of the Kitsap County prosecutor's Juvenile Division told the Seattle Times. The boy apparently retrieved the pistol from his mother's home.
During a preliminary hearing Thursday, bail was set at $50,000 for the boy. The boy's father, Patrick Cochran, told the Associated Press that his son is "a good kid" who made a "terrible mistake."
