VIDEO: Fla. Pursuit Ends In Gunfire

Four men were taken into custody at the end of a 20-mile high-speed pursuit in south Florida, after the vehicle's driver rammed two police vehicles and was captured by news helicopters weaving on the Palmetto Expressway at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

The pursuit began shortly after 12:25 p.m. in the unincorporated Kendall area, when Miami-Dade Police detectives responded to a call of a suspicious person in the backyard of 9221 N. Kendall Drive, Det. Alvaro Zabaleta told POLICE Magazine.

Responding officers confronted the suspects, who rammed two police vehicles with a silver Mercedes station wagon. The suspects headed north on the Palmetto Expressway with marked and unmarked units pursuing the Mercedes.

For more than 20 miles, the Mercedes weaved between lanes on the expressway. At one point, the suspects appeared to toss what appeared to be a handgun out the window, according to a Miami-Dade P.D. release.

The Mercedes entered a residential neighborhood in Miami Gardens and crashed into a fence at NW 167 Street just west of NW 27 Avenue. An unmarked police vehicle blocked the Mercedes from behind.

The driver can be seen jumping out of the Mercedes and trying to hop a chain-link fence, as officers open fire. Other officers then pull three other suspects out of the Mercedes.

Two subjects sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center. One subject is in critical condition and the other is stable.

Miami-Dade P.D. detectives are processing the vehicle. Charges are pending, Zabaleta said.
