Just before being fired, former Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia went before the cameras to defend his record on Thursday, calling out the police unions who have been criticizing his leadership, reports KSAZ .
During the news conference at police headquarters, Garcia demanded he be given a two-year contract, but instead, City Manager Ed Zuercher relieved him of his duties.
It's unknown if Garcia knew this was coming or if the news conference could have been a way to have the last word. Either way, he is the chief no more.
The Phoenix Vice Mayor's office has confirmed Assistant Chief Joe Yahner will take over as Chief of Police.
Phoenix City Manager Ed Zuercher said he fired Chief Garcia when he held a press conference despite Zuercher's order not to. He declined to comment on allegations Garcia levied against Councilman Sal DiCiccio claiming the councilman violated the law and city charter by calling for Garcia's termination.
