For nearly an hour-and-a-half, an alleged drunk driver led Trinity, Texas, police officers and Trinity County Sheriff's deputies on a 100+ mph chase in rural East Texas that was caught on an officer's body camera.
The officer, Randy Wheeler, was in a Trinity store parking lot at about 11 p.m. Friday, May 8 when he noticed the driver of a truck speed past him with squealing wheels, Trinity Police Chief Steven Jones told the Houston Chronicle.
Jones said the officer tried to pull the man over but he sped on.
Wheeler was joined by other officers, as well as members of the Trinity County Sheriff's Department, as the man led them 20 miles northeast on Highway 94 to Groveton, where he turned around and drove back toward Trinity.
On at least two occasions, officers managed to pin the driver's truck along the side of the road. In one instance, Wheeler shot out the driver's tires with his service pistol, causing the man to stop and raise his hands as if to surrender. But as officers attempted to pull him from his vehicle, he sped off again, almost striking the officers.
Finally, after more than an hour, police were able to stop the man, pull him from his vehicle, and arrest him. As they finally opened the door, they found him talking on his cellular phone.
The man, Bryan Larson of Hunstville, is charged with felony evading arrest; however, Jones said more charges may be pending with the district attorney.
