A donation jar at a Yorktown, VA, 7-Eleven that helped raise money for the family of slain Virginia State Trooper Chad Dermyer was stolen off the counter early Tuesday morning, according to York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Dennis Ivey Jr.
"The clerk said he [the suspect] was a regular who drives a dark 4-door car," Ivey said. "The clerk said he would call police if the man returned."
It was unclear how much money was in the donation jar when it was stolen from the Route 17 convenience store, WTVR TV reports.
In the days following Dermyer's death, the executive director of the Virginia State Police Association said $55,000 in donations had been sent in from around the country. That money would go to support the trooper's widow and two children.
Dermyer and 16 other troopers, special agents, and supervisors, were going through a training operation on March 31 at a Richmond bus station, when he was shot and killed by James Brown III, 34, of Aurora, Illinois. Brown was killed when Dermyer's fellow officers returned fire.
