A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper working a DWI Labor Day weekend task force is in critical condition after a suspected drunk driver slammed into his vehicle early Monday as he was stopped on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 45 near NASA Road 1, officials said.
DPS Lt. Craig Cummings said Trooper Chad Blackburn, who has been on the force for about 10 years, is at Memorial Hermann hospital downtown with serious injuries, reports the Houston Chronicle.
According to DPS officials, Trooper Chad Blackburn was in his cruiser, which was parked in the right emergency lane on I-45, when Tuwanna Moore, 31, slammed her car into the back of the cruiser just before 2:30 a.m., reports KPRC.
Blackburn was seriously injured in the crash, officials said. "He did have to be cut out of the car," DPS Sgt. Richard Standifer said.
Standifer said Moore's car flipped and crashed into the passenger side of the cruiser, where Blackburn was located.
Officials said Moore was charged with intoxicated assault causing bodily injury to a peace officer. She appeared in court Monday night and posted bond. In court, the prosecutor said Moore's blood alcohol level was 0.29%.
Blackburn, a husband and father, may need additional surgeries. "Trooper Blackburn has the following injuries: vertebrae fractures, multiple fractures to his pelvis, his spleen has been removed, he's also got bleeding and a collapsed lung," prosecutors said.
