VIDEO: 12 Charlotte Officers Injured, Police Vehicles Damaged in Rioting After Fatal OIS

Rioting that erupted after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Charlotte, NC, injured 12 officers, damaged police vehicles, and blocked Interstate 85 Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

Hours after the shooting, a large crowd had gathered near the scene in protest, sparking clashes with police and tear gas was deployed.

Protesters damaged at least two CMPD vehicles, one cruiser and one SUV, which were removed from the scene. One officer was hit in the face with a rock, CMPD told the Charlotte Observer. At least seven officers were taken to local hospitals in ambulances, according to WBTV.


Northbound lanes of Interstate 85 was shut down overnight and reopened early Wednesday morning. 

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. at an apartment complex. Officers said they were searching for a person with an outstanding warrant when they saw a man get out of a vehicle with a firearm.

When the man, later identified as 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott, got back into the vehicle, the officers approached. The report states Scott then got back out of the vehicle "armed with a firearm and posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject."

Police said a firearm "the subject was holding at the time of the shooting" was recovered at the scene, and that detectives were interviewing witnesses to the incident.

A woman claiming to be Scott's daughter live streamed the scene on Facebook for more than an hour after the shooting, WBTV reports.

In the video, she said her father was unarmed.

Both the officer involved and the subject are reportedly African American.
