An Amherst County, VA, deputy was shot in the head during a traffic stop Friday night, officials say.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies initiated a traffic stop at the Monroe Post Office in Amherst County around 11:30 p.m., reports WSET.

They say during the course of the stop, a passenger in the vehicle pulled out a handgun and shot a deputy in the head. Another deputy returned fire, striking the suspect.

The deputy who was shot has been treated and released.
The shooting suspect, 22-year-old Trevor D. Ewers, has been charged with one count of malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reports WHSV.
