Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer introduced a motion at a meeting of the board’s Budget and Finance Committee to cut funding for purchasing TASERs — the motion passed by a vote of three to two in favor.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that “proposals to equip San Francisco police with TASERs have been repeatedly shot down over the last decade, making the department the last major urban force in the country without them.”
Supervisor Fewer told the Chronicle that her decision to eliminate the funding was about cost — not politics.
Meanwhile, SFPD Police Chief Bill Scott said that he is committed to continue planning for the day his officers eventually get the less-lethal devices.
