An off-duty Fayetteville, NC, police officer was shot in Sampson County on Monday night, and the alleged shooter was later shot and wounded when he drove toward officers, authorities said.

The Sampson County Sheriff's Office reported that the Fayetteville officer was shot off Maxwell Road in the Clement community around 8:50 p.m. ABC11 reported that the shooting occurred when a man got into an argument with the Fayetteville officer at the officer's home, reports the Fayetteville Observer.

The officer was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville with serious wounds, the Sheriff's Office said. Sgt. Shawn Strepay, a Fayetteville Police Department spokesman, said the officer remained at the hospital Tuesday morning in stable condition "and we're just looking for a full recovery."

The shooting suspect was found in his vehicle in the middle of Dunn Road in Sampson County a short time after the Fayetteville officer was shot, the Sampson County Sheriff's Office said.

McQuillan said the driver refused orders to leave his truck. Instead of surrendering, the man drove at Sampson County deputies and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers in an attempt to ram them, the Sheriff's Office said. But he ran over the stop sticks the officers had set up.

The deputies and troopers also fired their guns at the driver, McQuillan said. "He was shot, and he ran off the road, and then the trailer [he was pulling] became detached from his truck," she said.
